Ian Holloway, formerly Principal Clarinettist of the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra (a position he held for nearly 30 years) had Clarinet tutors who instilled in him the value of maintaining his own instruments. Coupled with a love of design and a passion for 'how things work', his love of making music led him to repairing other woodwind instruments. These requests were often made by his professional musician colleagues - such was the trust placed in him for repairing or servicing their valuable professional instruments.
Ian currently repairs and restores musical instruments for a number of schools - Michaelhouse, Hilton College, Epworth, Wykeham College, to name but a few as well as treasured instruments of the internationally acclaimed saxophone artist Andrew Young, and those of members of the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra.
He has rescued many a performance by performing emergency repairs on instruments, to the extreme relief of the musicians involved.
